The future of radio is as media companies. The ability to transmit over towers will become less important, but the ability to deliver content via various platforms will be vital. Workers in this new culture will need to be able to gather the content and write it for reading online, listening online, or viewing online (both still pictures & video). Anything less would be like Marconi putting dots & dashes in stereo on an FM carrier or iPad. Convergence is here. We are living through the period of creative destruction of what we knew as the future gets built. I see a future where media companies compete against other media companies. Gone are radio stations competing against other radio stations. News papers against other newspapers. TV stations against other TV stations etc. Regulations are behind the curve on the changes we’re living through. Already cutting edge colleges and universities are building out tomorrow’s media platform and training students for the media world being born. All media merged into a single media center with like job duties (not media platforms – radio, print, TV, Internet) in operational pods. This will be the most exciting time to be in the media business, but to think of the future as radio, TV, newspaper or Internet is to have blinders on. Time to “poke the box” and see the future for the vibrant new media world it is.

Hi Denise!

The loud-and-clear message 90,000+ of us heard at the recent National Association of Broadcasters convention in Las Vegas was that the future of broadcasting is to-do-more-with-your-stuff-than-just-broadcast-it. As my associate Mike McVay says, "we're past towers-in-pastures now."

Radio stations are powerful brands, with decades of acceptance and habitual use by the two living generations that control most of the wealth in the USA.

Yet even they are wandering-off to iPhone, iPad, iThis, iThat. They already have Internet radio in-car, with devices like the cord I bought at The Apple Store. One end goes-into what-we-used-to-call "the cigarette lighter," the other goes into iPhone, and voila!

Despite the poor AM receiver that came with the car, I can now hear Rush Limbaugh again...although I'm driving-around Rhode Island, hearing him on a station in Dallas...a station owned by THE COMPETITOR OF Limbaugh's RI affiliate!

MORE, from my NAB convention notes: http://getonthenet.com/11May.pdf

Best regards,
HC
